A home match against Racing Academy is always going to be a battle and this match was as expected. Hawks started out on a flurry with Ethan Roberts and Dave Conlon dominating and going into a 9 – 0 lead before Academy scored. A changing of the guard saw a straight five on five off swap half way through this quarter to allow the bench precious minutes, unfortunately this allowed Academy have a scoring run themselves however Ben Gorse dropped a quick 6 points for Hawks thus ending the quarter 20 to 12 points up.

Starting out with the same five that finished the quarter saw Hawks continuing scoring. However defensive lapses allowed Academy into the paint and a quick run turned the affair into a 4 point game. The second quarter finished with Academy outscoring Hawks 16 to 11. Largely due to defensive breakdowns and lack of rebounding.

In the second half the Hawks went out with a strong five. With the newest Hawk 6ft 11inch Justin Miller dominating the centre. Justin, Conlon and Ethan Roberts attacked Academy inside and outside the key with Ethan and Ben Gorse putting pressure on the guards. Coach Darren Roberts did try and assist Academy after attracting a technical foul following a discussion with his team that the ref did not agree with. As well as a few quick fouls by the Hawks natural enforcer Adam O’Dowd saw Academy manage to gain a few points back. This quarter saw Hawks outscore Academy 19 to 13.

In the final quarter, thaw Hawks already had a large lead (50-40) and as expected, Academy attempted to mount a comeback – largely behind long time Derby player and the Outlaws u16 coach Tim Ringer, who had a flashback to his youth and put a few points up on the scoresheet with some good interior play. However the Hawks continued to chip away at the Academy defence and managed to seal the deal to the tune of an 18-10 final quarter win.

The final score was 68 to 53 in favor of HAWKS.

Ethan Roberts played a blinder with a personal 10 point run in the final quarter with Neil Gorse finding some new legs and knees making a couple of lay ups (something he has not done for a couple of years).

Ilkeston Hawks MVP was voted as Ethan Roberts and Racing Academy MVP was J. Mabhindu.
