Ilkeston Outlaws Senior Mens Team Announced!
The Ilkeston Outlaws Senior Men will this be entering only one team into the Nottinghamshire Sherwood League Division I. Leaving the Hawks to represent Ilkeston Basketball in the Sherwood ‘s second division.
After securing their place in the top-flight of Sherwood Basketball in the 2015-2016 season, the team managed to fight hard to keep their spot with a near identical roster in the 2016-2017 campaign.
Looking to the future, the team is hoping to grow each and every year – With the end game of entering a team into the Basketball England National League. Meaning that the club would have representation in this league at all age groups from under 14’s up to seniors.
On the topic of the whole team’s growth, Coach Liam Hayman Tansley had this to say:
This season will see the most important change in the Outlaws men since I have been at the club – an attitude change.
We are looking to compete, to win and to drive the mens section of the club into the same high level that our junior outfits compete at. Our new signings are half of the change, but the biggest one will come from within.
We’re happy with how our team looks and are looking forward to seeing what this team can do in the Sherwood League this season.
The 2017 Outlaws will be led out by captain Chip Humpreys, The two-time Outlaws MVP has been working hard this offseason and is hoping to achieve greatness with this Outlaws team.
Coach Liam Hayman Tansley had this to say about Chip, and his return as captain
Chip has been our best player for the past two years, achieving the clubs MVP award last year unanimously. He has been working on his leadership qualities this year and i’m looking forward to see his diversify his game into the intangibles that you expect of a team captain.
For that to happen, the team needs to grow. And in order to facilitate this growth, the team has added a few new players to the team.
Former Spondon Flame Gareth Keeling has joined the club.
After being away at university and focusing on his semi-professional futsal career, Gareth has joined the Outlaws with the intention on fighting for the coveted starting point guard spot.
Coach Liam Hayman Tansley had this to say about the arrival of Gareth:
It’s great to have Gaz wearing the blue and white this year. He provides that extra little bit of pace that the team was lacking last year, as well as a bit of the offensive fire to this team. – We were fine defensively last year so hopefully Gaz can help us step up our game on the other end of the floor – On top of all that he is a great locker room presence and will add to the teams togetherness both on and off the court.
Joshua Turner has also re-joined the club, after having a year out.
Josh was a key part of the Outlaws 2015-16 promotion winning team. Taking a year out due to a tear in his meniscus and ensuring that he was fully healed to come back into the team.
Coach Hayman Tansley said this about Turner:
Josh was one of the foundations of the team when we got promotion. The team was completely different without him last year. All of his former team mates have been eagerly awaiting his return and its exciting to see what he can bring to the team now he is back to full strength.
Finally, former Outlaws u18 stars James Wood, Zach Mairura and Jordan Briggs have re-joined the club, after being away for their studies at university.
James had been with the club for numerous years before heading off to university at Loughborough while Jordan chose York for his university destination. Both players are former teammate of Outlaws captain Chip Humpreys, Both James and Jordan have experience playing in the National League, while James was part of the performance pipeline for East Midlands and trained with England, as well as being the captain of his outlaws team and winning numerous MVP awards for his team, who have had the most success for an Outlaws team in the then England Basketball National League in recent history.
Zach was part of an Outlaws squad quite a bit before Wood and Briggs, and after university – he headed off to Australia to continue to grow. Playing basketball over there also.
Coach Hayman Tansley said this about Wood and Briggs:
James is one of the toughest competitors that we could have wanted at this club. Since he has started back at training he is always the first on the court and is still hungry to improve his game and drive the team forward. James will help with the leadership and communication of the team, as he has experience leading a group of players. Some of which he is playing with now.
Jordan is also one of those guys you want on your team. He is the first on the court and the last to go home after training, always putting in work to improve himself. Hopefully he can use his attitude to influence other people and we will see some of the improvement he has made across the whole squad.
Zach has had an impact on training since the first session he turned up. He has gelled with everyone in the team and has started to become a vocal leader. His mid range jump is automatic and he also has a plethora of post moves at his disposal if needed. He is definitely a great asset for this team
