From Hawks Coach Darren Roberts

The match started out badly for Ilkeston with Aaron Hill from Spartans hitting a couple, it was 4 minutes into the game before Ethan Roberts was fouled on a lay-up and ended up on the free throw line unfortunately only hitting one, but we were on the scoreboard. This sparked a Hawks run with us scoring the next 6 points before Joe Brazel of Spartans hit a three pointer. The scoring was evenly matched this quarter with Hawks going down 16 to 19 at the end of this quarter.

Time to exert some pressure and the guards for Hawks stepped up with 6 quick lay ups for Ethan and a couple from Rich George and James Pacey. Ex Ilkeston player James Shipley hit a nice three pointer for Spartans as did Joe Brazel again. Ethan and James continued to be a dominant factor going on drives. The defence was tight for Hawks making use of all the big men on rotation to control the back line and boards. Second quarter saw Hawks score 18 to Spartans 9 taking the first half 34 to 28 overall great turnaround.

Spartans came out in the third firing again getting within 4 points, Ethan Roberts picked up his third foul so was benched and on came Ben Gorse who came alive rebounding, outside shots and generally being everywhere on the court best game I have seen him play after coaching him at U16 and U18 levels for the last three years. He scored 10 of the Hawks points this quarter and we took this quarter 17 to 9 so now 51 to 37 up.

Final quarter and it was obvious that Spartans play book consisted of fouling the Hawks players at any and every opportunity to put them on the line. Not a bad tactic to be said as the Hawks free throw shooting was poor to say the least! Out of 14 free throws only hitting 5 in the last quarter which was replicated in the whole match with 28 free throws taken and 13 converted – work to be done in this area. However Hawks came out victorious with the final score 60 to 51.

Nice to see that the voted MVP’s for the game are two 17 year old lads who were in my Derbyshire U17 Basketball Team this year, credit to both lads and clubs.

MVP for Hawks = Ethan Roberts
