Match report: U16s overtime disappointment v Worcester
Ilkeston’s latest National game for the U16 boys was their first of the season at home to the Worcester Bears, a team we knew nothing about much like most of the teams in the West Mids. Division we are in this year.
The opening period was a very tight affair with both teams trading baskets throughout and ended with Worcester just edging it – 10 to 12.
This was in away encouraging, as the Outlaws are now having to use four newcomers along with
the boys who have remained with the team from last year. On top of this one of the “originals” Matt Brown, who has been playing really well so far, was missing through injury so that didn’t help matters.
Both the 2nd and 3rd periods (Taii got to us just before the finish of this one from his U18 game in Coventry!), where again a battle in which Worcester won both, the 2nd went to them 15 – 24 the 3rd 14 – 17, so down by 14 going into the last period.
In this last period Ilkeston absolutely dominated the whole game and should really have put Worcester out of sight, but with some crucial missed attempts and with some very tired legs, particularly from the experienced players who are having to put a full shift in, Worcester clung on. Ilkeston won this one 19 – 5!!, which made it a tied game 58 all.
Overtime came and went for us on this occasion, with Worcester edging it 5 – 13 and some very tired players went home a little dejected, which is understandable.
However, when you think we had an experienced player out, Taii not with us for the majority of the game and four inexperienced players giving their all, we feel it was a moral victory to us and both Coaches Alan and Roger are very upbeat at to what lies ahead.
