MATCH REPORTS: Senior women v Kettering & Leicester Bright Sparks
This week the senior women faced the two top teams in each League; Kettering Phoenix and Leicester Bright Sparks. We have never come close to beating either team so the two loses were not unexpected, as both are superb shooting teams.
V Kettering we had a decent first quarter (17 – 27) but imploded late in
the 2nd, gifting basket after basket with destructive turnovers, 6 – 20
that quarter and 23 – 47 at halftime.
A big improvement in 3rd quarter, losing by just one point , 16 – 17 and 10 – 19 final quarter
Full time 82 – 50 to Kettering.
Our MVP, Morag McIvor, had 27 pts.
A very different game on Wednesday. The team lost 73 – 41 but we went back to last
season’s successful style and fully committed to playing the offence. A poor first quarter where we struggled to establish a rhythm or pattern ended 6 – 20 but we improved in all the other quarters.
The highlight was the defensive performance of the three juniors, a 16 year old and two 15.
Zara Lee had 4 points and was great at the front of the zone. Libby Mellor again played with great maturity and defended a very experienced player incredibly well, coming off the victor of some one-on-one situations. Debutante Georgia Noon played in the centre of the zone and was incredible! She totally bossed the key against bigger, very experienced opponents and was voted MVP of the match.
Two more juniors will debut in the next Maid Marian league game and it is hoped that they will rise to the challenge as well as their peers have done.
